By Ruby Zavala
We are glad to introduce you to our latest volunteer of the month, Kamilla Macar (Kam). Unlike most of us, Kam was born at home, not in a hospital. She grew up in Suburban Philadelphia. As a child, one of her ambitions was to be a boy! She felt that boys always had more fun than girls so she wanted to be a boy and have fun and play outside. As she grew up and was in college, she had the rare opportunity to direct an orchestra, which no students had ever been allowed to do. She is very proud of that opportunity.
When talking about challenges through her life, Kam says one of her greatest ones was surviving a divorce. On the brighter side, also hiking throughout the entire state of Colorado. "It took me 7 years but I made it!” Kam really enjoys music, hiking, and biking. Plus; she loves art. Kam says that if anyone wants someone to meet up with for a hike, she's a great one to go with.
A retired accountant, nowadays she wakes up, “works on some word puzzles from the Daily Camera, goes out for a hike, comes back, plays Rummy cube with some friends, gets ready for dinner and ends the night with a good movie." That's the perfect day for Kam. Two items on her bucket list are to visit every museum possible and attend orchestra concerts in Washington DC and New York City. Kindness, musicianship and optimism are 3 words to describe Kam. Her kindness has shown through at Cultivate every week for the past two years as an order taker for Carry-Out Caravan. Each week she connects more and more with our clients, which is one of the reasons she enjoys volunteering at Cultivate-to be more connected with people in the community. Plus she lives so close to the office that she walks to "work," and gets some great exercise along with her volunteer experience.
One piece of advice she would like to give to people of younger generations is “don’t ask how much you can get away with. Ask how much you can contribute.'' Kam's time volunteering with Cultivate is ending in a few weeks because she is moving to another part of Colorado. Kamilla would like to thank Cultivate and the staff members for being such caring, loving, fun and wonderful people that do so much for seniors in our community and she wants everyone to know how much she's loved coming in each week and being part of the Cultivate family. We treasure our friendship with Kamilla. The staff and many, many clients will miss her so much. We wish her the best and thank her for putting so much of her heart into being a Cultivate volunteer.
