Client Cameo: Jane Smith

By Cam Low

This month's Client Cameo is Jane Smith, nominated by our staff members. Not only is she a current Carry-Out Caravan and VetsGo client, but she also served as a volunteer for Cultivate in the past. Jane volunteered approximately five years for us when we were Boulder County CareConnect located in Longmont.  She helped in the office a couple times a week and drove clients for the former Medical Mobility program. It is such an honor to be able to provide our services in return to Jane for all the time she donated to our programs. Since her car was totalled in a car accident a few years ago, she decided to not buy a new car.  Using our VetsGo program provides a reliable and friendly way for Jane to get to and from medical appointments, and she says that Carry-Out Caravan is a godsend during the pandemic when it is too risky for her to do her own shopping anymore.

Jane lived in upstate New York where she studied music in college. She married Richard Smith, a service gentleman, who served in the Army for over 21 years. She worked as a substitute teacher wherever they were stationed. Once he retired from the service they built a house near her parents and she worked as a special education teacher and taught both choir and instrumental music at the church. Jane and her husband raised 4 children and has 9 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren! They decided to move to Loveland, Colorado to live closer to her son after her husband suffered a heart attack. They lived there until Richard passed in 2007. She now resides in Longmont in a retirement community and remains fiercely independent. She still plays her organ, though for shorter periods of time, cooks, and bakes. Her neighbors enjoy the delicious baked goods that she shares with them. Jane enjoys conversing with friends and neighbors via phone or email, visiting with family, reading, and, of course, playing music.
