Flourish with Food: Holiday Musings

By Mary Lynne Hixson, MA, RD

From features past….

Last December’s feature focused on easy dinners to help manage the season’s busyness. It shared several strategies for keeping weeknight meals simple and stress-free—everything from all-in-one dishes like stews, soups, and sheet-pan meals to relying on healthy frozen entrées, convenient ingredients, and planned-overs (AKA leftovers).

If you’re looking for more ideas, the Food Network Kitchen team offers a great collection of tested one-pot meals. Their roundup includes everything from hearty pastas to cozy soups.

The cranberry has made a couple appearances in past holiday features and recipes as well—from a low-sugar cranberry-orange sauce in 2020 to a holiday cranberry-orange nut bread in 2024.

This quick bread recipe highlighted King Arthur’s white whole wheat flour, now thankfully rebranded as Golden Flour. The old name sounded like a contradiction (white and whole wheat?), so the new label makes an explanation a bit easier.

Speaking of King Arthur Baking: they recently opened a pop-up store at 1638 Pearl St. in Boulder. Many of the items you’d normally find in their online Shop are available there in person. It’s a great opportunity to shop local while picking up high-quality baking essentials and unique holiday gifts.

The pomegranate—now in season through January—has long held cultural and religious significance during the holidays. The delicious arils offer a bright balance of sweet and tart, delivering a refreshing, tangy burst of juice with every bite. Their glistening, jewel-like appearance adds a festive touch to any dish.  Explore California Pomegranates for an appetizing selection of holiday recipes.
